New Poll

I have added a new poll to the blog so PLEASE, PLEASE participate and cast your vote for your favorite laundry detergent!

I have been struggling lately with this huge dilema. Every time I go to do laundry, I am unsure which laundry detergent to use. My mom has always used the powder, and I think Casey's mom has used the liquid stuff. I have used both, and the kind I buy usually depends on which one is cheaper, but I want to know which kind you guys prefer.

I know what you are thinking: this is serious stuff. And I whole-heartedly agree. So please help me out and let me know what you think. Feel free to leave a comment if you are extremely biased toward one type.

Thanks!!!

I hate the powder kind (I buy the cheap stuff either way) because a lot of the time it doesn't dissolve all the way, and then I'm left with slimy, half-dissolved white powdery junk in the folds of the clothes and I have to rewash them. No one likes rewashing laundry.

funny you should bring this up Nat, I just switched laundry detergent YESTERDAY!! I was using Kirkland (Costco) brand powder but noticed that my kids clothes aren't getting as clean as I would like. I just switched to Tide with Bleach (which is what I used to use years ago and can still buy at Costco). As for the powder... add it into the water in your washing machine before you put the clothes in. Then you won't get nasty undissolved stuff like Krystal. (And the powder is usually cheaper.)

I buy the cheap liquid stuff because then I don't have to worry about dissolving the detergent. I like the kind that smells way good but then it costs lots so I don't buy it very often. I really don't care about laundry that much though because Nick usually does it for me.

one more thing to add. I was thinking about this (as I was doing laundry) and thought I'd mention that I use dark laundry detergent for my dark stuff. I think it makes a difference because before I used that stuff I noticed all my blacks, etc. were getting faded. Just a thought.

I'm a bit crazy so I use liquid detergent (1-because I have a energy efficient washer that requires liquid and 2-because I hate powder that doesn't dissolve) that is natural/organic, chemical-free and environmentally friendly. It smells good, washes good, and is nice to sensitive skin. You can get a big bottle of it at most Costcos for like $11-15, but that might seem expensive to some.

Here is the opinion from a 30 years of experience, laundry veteran, who has washed the Wasatch Mountain range of clothes through the years. And no, I did not use a wringer washer.

When Wayne and I were first married, I use to buy the cheapest kind. I found that my whites and colors just looked dingy so I invested in Tide or Gain with bleach. Gain is a little bit cheaper. I use the powder and I have used the liquid too. I don't really care which I use. I have discovered that the powder has problems dissolving when there are too many clothes in the washer, so don't fill your washer with too many clothes. Emily's method of putting the detergent in first is a great way too. I am not an expert, but that is just what I have learned through the years and mountains of wash I have done. I'm sure you will figure it out. Thanks for the opportunity to use my years of experience. It's nice to know it's good for something.

I always use Tide. I have used cheaper stuff in years past, but found that my clothes were just not getting as clean as I had hoped. Powder or liquid does not matter to me. I buy it when it is on sale and I have coupons.
This is my method: Start the water. Add the detergent. Always turn jeans inside out. And if you are treating stains, turn that item of clothing inside out, and put the SHOUT-or whatever on the inside. Since I have started doing that, set-stains have been much less, and I treat the stains immediately.
Interesting that we all have so much to say about Laundry.

Hey Natalie--did you know that I check our your blog now and then? I love it! Anyway, we bought a washer 3 or 4 years ago that ended up being a total lemon, and had to buy another new one! In the course of this happening we did some research about washing machines and took ours apart a couple of times. One fix-it man told us that the liquid detergent really gumms up your machine and so to use powder as much as possible. I too buy the powder Tide (and think it's worth it--watch for sales). I only really use the liquid tide for stains. It works miracles. Just put it directly on the clothes, rub it in, and let it sit for a bit. Good luck with the process. Trial and error!
